Re:  Sigma Tau Delta Fall Mailing

At this time of the academic year, most Sigma Tau Delta chapters are already into the full swing of meetings and activities. It’s always a spirited and exciting time, both in dealing with present plans and in looking ahead. STD has grown larger now than ever; during the last academic year we added nearly 9,000 new members in our 775+ active chapters in the U.S., Europe, and the Caribbean. We again increased the number of scholarships, grants, and awards; expanded The STD Newsletter, The STD Rectangle, and The STD Review; and made further “user-friendly” changes to our website, www.english.org. We look for this to be the best STD year ever!

Speaking of our website, the purpose of this email (which replaces our traditional fall postal mailing), is to draw your attention to several important and timely links on our website:

2011 International Convention, March 23-26 in Pittsburgh, PA

New information is being posted almost daily to www.englishconvention.org, so you’ll want to check back often. This week, the links for online paper and panel submissions will be activated on Friday, October 15, and a poster has been added to help you promote convention submissions.

Our last convention in St. Louis broke all records with well over 900 attendees. We expect to top that figure in 2011. Once again, the Board will provide a $200 reimbursement ($400 for chapters outside of the continental U.S.) to chapters that send a student delegate to the General Business Session and to the Regional Caucus held on Friday, March 25. For other ideas on raising travel funds, see the convention website.

Scholarships, Awards, Grants, and Internships

A flyer has been added to help you promote Sigma Tau Delta scholarships, awards, grants, and internships—all offered exclusively to STD members. Also new this year, the scholarship application deadline has been extended to November 22 to allow students more time to prepare their applications.

Better World Books Campus Book Drives

A flyer has been added that highlights exciting new features, including no scanning, more funding, and more rewards. If you are looking for a turnkey service project that also raises funds for your chapter, check out the many benefits of a BWB campus book drive.

I send best wishes for a creative, energizing, and productive academic year! I look forward to seeing you next March in Pittsburgh! If, before then, you need information or advice, please check our website and/or contact the Central Office; we’re here to help.

Note to Chapter Sponsors: For your chapter officers to receive this email directly, their names and email addresses must be entered under the Chapter Officers tab in Write Away. If they are not, please forward this email—and consider adding them to Write Away.
