Inviting New Members
| Procedures | Helpful hints |
|---|---|
| Determine which students are eligible for Sigma Tau Delta. | Review the requirements for membership. The Registrar's Office or your department should be able to provide a list of students who meet the membership requirements. Useful downloads: |
| Send a letter of invitation and application for membership, and information about Sigma Tau Delta to eligible students. OR, consider holding an invitational meeting to introduce potential new members to Sigma Tau Delta. Pass out infromation and applications during the meeting. |
|
| Establish a deadline for students to return their application and the one-time $37 national induction fee. | Some chapters also add their local chapter dues which they can keep to pay for chapter activities, administrative costs, etc. |
| Enroll new members online in Write Away! | Write Away! is an online chapter management system that stores all of your chapter membership information. It is still important, however, to print a copy of the member list for the chapter records. |
| Pay the $37 induction fee for each new member. | Write Away! accepts credit card payments online. If your chapter is unable to pay by credit card, follow the instructions to enroll new members and send payment by check. Do not send student checks. Any check(s) written from a student's personal checking account will be held until the check(s) clear the bank. This will result in an additional delay of 2 to 3 more weeks. |
| After payment is approved or received, allow up to three weeks to receive membership certificates and pins for your new members. | Certificates and pins are mailed First Class to the chapter sponsor at their school address. New members also receive a one year subscription to Sigma Tau Delta publications beginning the semester after they are inducted. |
| Plan an induction ceremony for new members. | Many chapters have a formal induction ceremony for their new members. Ideas for planning an induction ceremony are found in Chapter Activities: Ceremonies and Formal Events. |
