Better World Books Internship - Summer 2010
Congratulations to Kerrin Epstein (Alpha Alpha Pi Chapter, Gettysburg College, PA), the recipient of the Sigma Tau Delta/Better World Books Summer 2010 Internship!
A paid summer internship opportunity is available from Better World Books to provide an interested undergraduate student member of Sigma Tau Delta with experience in a variety of areas in social enterprise and the online book industry. The Sigma Tau Delta/Better World Books Summer Internship will run six consecutive weeks beginning June 7, 2010. The recipient will work 30 hours per week earning $10 per hour in Alpharetta, Georgia, in the Atlanta metro area. For the 2010 summer internship, Better World Books will provide the recipient with an additional $1,500 stipend to assist with travel and housing expenses.
Individual colleges and universities may arrange for academic credit for the internship; however, that must be worked out between the student and her/his university.
Each applicant must be prepared to accept the internship and its conditions if it is awarded to him or her. Failure to do so may jeopardize the continuation of the Better World Books summer internship program for Sigma Tau Delta.
Interested undergraduate student members of Sigma Tau Delta must submit via email a one-page resume, contact information for two academic references, and a cover letter addressing the applicant's qualifications and interest in social enterprise. Attachments must be titled in the order of last name, first name, and topic title (example: Smith.John.Resume.doc). Students applying for the summer internship must have participated in one BWB book drive.
The primary focus of the internship will be to reach the past, present, and future of campus sustainability. Important areas will include:
- Current trends on college campuses toward sustainability
WHO? Are there certain types of colleges/universities that are trending this direction?
WHAT? What is the focus (LEED, food, paper, etc.)?
WHERE? Are there certain geographic regions that are trending more than others? - Research on current or emerging organizations, consortiums, or state/national level initiatives focused on campus sustainability
- The impact that book recycling could have on campus sustainability (average books per student on campus, impact of recycling books on campus)
- SWOT analysis of book recycling program as it relates to campus sustainability
Email all questions and submissions by February 15 to Mary Murphy, internships@betterworldbooks.com.
